This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
It is so hard to get students interested in advanced math classes in the inner city. I happen to have students that were not only interested but requested that AP Statistics be taught at our inner city school last year. This school year they made it happen. I now teach AP Statistics to students in a high-risk, high need, inner city school environment.
AP Statistics is a completely new type of math class for my students. They enjoy the learning but are having to spend a lot of time handwriting their notes, as well as hand making descriptive graphs. With only one black and white printer in the building for all teachers to use, it is rare that my students have access to the notes and PowerPoint’s that I have already prepared for them.
It would be amazing if we had an HP color printer inside the classroom. I could use it to pre-print students’ notes and diagrams, so that we can cover enough material for them to do well on the AP exam instead of wasting it taking tons of notes. The students can also begin using computer software to make their own charts and graphs and use the printer to print these items out. Thereby becoming great statisticians and having the presentations that support their data analysis.
Your help will ensure that my students have more time to learn the required material for success on the AP Statistics exam. This is their first time in a college level math class, and your donation will help inspire a love for mathematics learning.
