My school serves a very diverse population where many of the students or their families are from another country. Last year my 3rd-grade classroom of 20 students came from all over the world- Vietnam, Bosnia, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Ukraine, Syria, Iraq, and the United States. We are a high poverty Title 1 school and my students live in an urban neighborhood. They come to school for a safe place where their basic needs are met by the warm and welcoming staff members. The students get constant support and are engaged in their learning. For most of them, the opportunities that they have at school will help shape their futures.
My Project
My students are VERY active and love to learn. My classroom needs flexible seating to help all students reach their full potential. I believe my kids are able to choose what works best for them in terms of where they learn. If a child wants to lay on the floor to do independent reading, I encourage it. If some want to stand to play a math game that is great too. I love that my students are independent thinkers at this young age and know what will help them focus best. I encourage that independence in them but I also don't want them laying on a dirty floor.
Giving my students choices and opportunities to learn in different ways is the key to a successful classroom.
I have noticed over the years that as kids become more active and ADHD is more prevalent in our schools, kids do not sustain attention very long while sitting in a traditional classroom seat. All of these flexible seating options will help my students focus better and be the most successful they can be.
