I teach Kindergarten at a Chicago Public School. In my classroom, I have 20 children ranging in ages from 5-6 years old. Our school is located in one of the many housing projects in Chicago. We are an early childhood school, housed in a building with two other schools. I am writing this proposal for materials to create a cooking center in my classroom. Food is something that is of great interest to my students. Through cooking, my students can gain many academic and social experiences as well as learn about the benefits of good nutrition. Some examples of skills I want the children in my room to experience are, physical development (chopping bananas, grating cheese), math skills (measuring, counting snacks), science skills (seeing batter change from liquid to solid), literacy development (making a shopping list of materials needed, learning cooking terminology), social skills (working with other classmates) and social studies (sharing family or cultural recipes). These materials would provide hands on cooking experiences for all my students throughout the year. Please consider funding my proposal. Thank You!
