My Kindergarten students love to write literature responses that they have to books that they read or are read to out loud. They love to draw and write about their favorite characters and they sometimes give new endings to some of their favorite stories. In doing these activities they have been able to learn about different literature events that may happen when they read a story. They are very enthusiastic when it comes to doing these activities in our class. I teach a monolingual Kindergarten class in P.S. 128. This school is based in Upper Manhattan in Washington Heights. Most of the students are of Hispanic descent and we are considered a SURR school--which means that it is a school of great needs. My students are very hardworking and have now started to read and write. This is one of the activities that they love to do. Some of the materials that we would need for this project is 3 boxes of copy paper, handwriting paper for the practice of their penmanship and a stapler to put their work together. My class is comprised of 24 students and a paraprofessional and myself. I believe that with these materials my students would benefit in their writing and reading process. Having them respond to books that they love to read is one of the most valuable things that they could learn. It would help them tremendously in the future. Because of this activity my students are able to distinguish who are the characters and the settings in a story. To have them write it in paper is evidence that they are on a road to learning. That I think is the best of all. STUDENTS WHO LEARN TO READ AND WRITE!!
