Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are incredible 7th and 8th-grade students from a very diverse inner-city school. Most of my students come from Main South, and 100% of my students receive free lunch. My students can be very challenging at first, so I try to build a positive and trusting relationship with them. A lot of my students come from traumatic and broken homes, and I work extra hard to make my classroom as inviting and homey as possible.
At my school, minorities are the majority.
Spanish is one of the electives offered and my students get to learn about the Spanish language and culture through units and class projects. Spanish is a fast-growing language and is predicted to be the most popular language by 2050, and my goal is to help my students be prepared for this.
My Project
I am a Spanish Teacher at an inner-city Middle School.
This upcoming year, I will be offering a new curriculum for our students.
This course is called Native Speakers and is targeted for those students who speak a little bit to fluent Spanish, but probably don't read and write it well. Since we have little funding, we, unfortunately, won't be getting materials for this course. I will have to utilize online articles and Youtube videos in order to teach my students.
My goal for these students is for them to progress to Advanced Placement once they transition to High School.
With your help, I can get these students' reading materials for this new course. Please help me get my students the materials they deserve in order to master their reading skills.
