I work in a self-contained special education elementary school for children with a variety of disabilities. My class consists of 6 children with autism. My students do not have spontaneous speech and need help with most activities. It is very hard to find programs to teach my students. Typical children learn from information in their environment. Children with autism do not learn the same way as typically developing children. They need special prompts to gain information for learning. Many times these prompts come from teachers. With these cues, children with autism can learn and progress. The greatest problem they face is dependency on these prompts. Teachers cannot attend to every student every second of the day. Students must learn to be independent in order to continue learning. For example, I will tell one of my students to take out a pencil for writing time. They will then take out the pencil. Unfortunately, children with autism become dependent on these cues and may never learn to automatically take out the pencil. After telling a student to take out a pencil for an entire year I am amazed that they cannot do it without a prompt from me. They are not sure how to get what they want and will not initiate it without a prompt. I would like to create a talking classroom. By talking classroom I mean setting up “talking symbol notepads” in my classroom. The talking symbol has a picture of the word and a button that the child can press. When the button is pressed the recorded message plays. I can record a prompt for my students to use. This is ideal because they will be prompting themselves. Independence is always my goal. Giving my students the ability to independently prompt themselves will make them less dependent on me and more independent.
