I teach ninth grade ESL at Bell Multicultural High School in NW Washington, D.C. Like the character in the book "Enrique's Journey to the U.S.", some of my students have crossed the border or flew into the U.S. leaving behind family, friends, and the life they knew. During the year, we study a unit on immigration. Students study factors that pull immigrants to the U.S. and the factors that push them away from their country. Finding texts that relates to the students' lives is rare and difficult. For this unit, I would like to use the book "Enrique's Journey to the U.S." and have students read the book to aid them in writing their own story about their journey to the U.S. I am requesting 50 copies of the book; currently, the book is only available in hardcover. "Enrique's Journey" is one of the few books out there that is really representative of the students' own lives. Reading this book will help them to have a bigger understanding of why their families immigrated to the U.S. and it will also help them confront, in a safe place, the challenging issues they face when they reunite with a parent or family member they have not seen in years.
