My Students

Would you believe your English teacher if she told you she used to HATE reading? Growing up, I never read unless I absolutely had to. Believe it or not, I was 23 when I discovered my love for reading. Help my students find this love and prove it is NEVER too late!

My students are 7th and 8th graders in a self contained special education setting.

They attend a public community school of over 1,000 students. They are spunky, energetic, playful, bright, funny, motivated, and most of all resilient. Even with great motivation and resilience, reading is not their favorite subject. This is usually because it is a struggle for them. However, I have found that with that "just right" book, each one of them loves to read. When each student finds a genre, an author, or a topic that they can relate to or connect with, they cannot get enough! However with our budget restrictions in public education it can be difficult to keep our classroom library refreshed. With your help we can peak student interest in reading, and peak student success.

My Project

Reading abilities are crucial in education and life. Due to their below grade level reading abilities, it becomes difficult and frustrating when my students feel forced to read. But, high interest reading material on or just above their reading levels challenges my students without frustrating them. They become excited to read and make even greater gains in the classroom. Reading abilities affect our students in all content areas as well as in their daily lives. With these high interest books my students will be able to read daily in our classroom, improving their reading endurance and overall reading abilities. They will complete a number of book projects that will display their comprehension of the books, as well as their growth. Further more, these projects will be used in end of the year portfolios to help determine promotion to the next grade. Most would agree that a project is much more interesting, comprehensive, and representative of abilities when a child is interested.

I cannot express in words alone the feeling one gets when a classroom of struggling readers gets enthusiastic about reading, excited about new books, and thrilled to receive books as gifts and prizes.

A donation to this project helps aspiring readers achieve their goals of being adept readers; it helps them succeed in ALL content areas which builds confidence that cannot be taken away. This is a true gift, an ultimate gift that can never be lost or forgotten. Thank you for your consideration.
