Citizen Schools at Bedichek Middle School is a program for middle schoolers that helps put students on track for success in high school, college, and their future careers. We work with students after school to help them develop their communication and leadership skills. We provide opportunities for students to explore their community by going on field trips and by arranging a dozen community-led apprenticeships that last a semester. We would love to be able to capture those moments with pictures. That is why our proposal request is for two Kodak digital cameras and the accompanying memory cards. This past semester, we recognized in hindsight the moments that we missed by not having a camera handy. Our students toured the Zachary Scott Theatre, the UT campus, and even did a collection for canned goods that they dropped off at the local area food bank. For almost all of our students, these local community visits were a first. Our program serves a public school in a low income area of Austin, Texas. Most of our students haven't had the chance to explore the city and all that it has to offer. We are hoping to not miss any more future photo opportunities like these. Having two cameras would allow us the flexibility for students and teachers to snap shots for fun and for posterity at the same time. Since some of our apprenticeships are about different ways to capture images-murals, film, or journalism-this will be another creative outlet for the students in our program. It is important for to us that the kids get the opportunity to be the photographers because it creates a sense of ownership and pride for them - especially if their photo is featured in our monthly newsletter! We have almost one hundred students in our program, and they all enjoy being in the limelight. This will be another great chance for them to show off their skills.
