My Students

Children who read...succeed! I want all of my students to have every opportunity to be successful. It may not seem like something as simple as an inviting carpet in the reading corner could motivate students to read, but it does! Students who read often will be successful in school and life!

I teach in a title one (low income) school.

Many of them do not have role models at home encouraging them to spend time daily reading a book. I try to create a classroom library and reading corner that will both inspire and motivate kids to read. Many of them struggle to read, therefore they do not like it. If children leave the third grade and aren't grade level readers, they will likely struggle throughout their entire school career..many of them will drop out of school as many of their family members have. I want to give each of my students every resource that I can to help them become the best student possible and achieve as much as possible! Sadly, there just is not enough funds in our school budget to allow me make large purchases like this. Without the help of donors, I will not be able to make this wonderful vision of a reading corner that I have in my mind a reality.

My Project

I want to inspire children to read, and something as simple as a fun rug in a reading corner can do that! Kids are excited in school about small things. I just have to find the small ways to catch their attention and "reel them in!" I have always dreamed of creating an inviting reading corner for them. Our school has cold, tile floors that are not carpeted. In order to make a comfortable reading environment, a carpet is a necessity. I have in the past been using an old rug from Wal-Mart that is in beyond sad shape. An expensive rug like the one I am asking for is just not something I can personally afford or the school is willing (or able) to purchase for me. The rug is the main focus in the corner. As of right now, the flat bean bags and old worn out and faded rug is just not doing much to invite them over....however, we are thankful for what we do have. Without our old rug, we wouldn't have a reading corner at all! A new rug would bring new life to our reading corner!

I could spend hours lost in a good book.

That didn't happen for me until I was in late elementary school. My teacher had a reading corner in my fifth grade class, and I loved sitting over there. One day while visiting the reading corner, I stumbled upon the Sweet Valley Twins series, and I was a hooked reader. I graduated in May with my second master's degree, and I have no doubt that reading corner and book series help place me on the path I am today. I want to make a difference in public schools!
