My Students

Making the shift to Common Core State Standards means the way we think about reading will have to be changed. One specific example would have to be the emphasis on writing through the use of technology. My challenge is to incorporate this while making room for it in our overcrowded classrooms.

My students attend elementary school in a good district.

In hard economic times, our school still manages to pull it together and provide when they can, even though sacrifices have to be made. Many homes have computers, but not all have Internet access. Students tell us that often they are not allowed to access their parents' computers and the only time they get to use one is at school. There is a high majority of children living in poverty. Many are being raised by their grandparents. Our state has been greatly affected by drug use and our children suffer greatly for it. Every classroom has instances of families living in motels, without transportation, or parents who are unemployed. Over 70% of my class receives free lunches. My students are not easy to motivate and crave attention. I believe they do the very best they can with what they are given, and for the most part, want to be successful. Parental support for our school is below average.

My Project

I wish to develop a writing center and connect it with our new Common Core Standards. One of the requirements is that children be able to write fluently and intelligently, while publishing stories using various methods of technology. I would like to use the netbooks in a center where children can visit when they have created a piece of writing. While developing keyboarding skills, they will be able to use a word processing program to type and print their work. In addition, they will be able to access the Internet in this center to gather information and other types of research. The other materials will enhance the writing and reading process by giving our class some different opportunities to work with words in reading centers.

Elementary teachers have been encouraged for several years now to place our teaching focus on reading and mathematics in order to become successful on state mandated tests.

Subjects like writing, grammar, science, and social studies have fallen by the wayside in order to accomplish this task. With the newly introduced Common Core Standards, we will be expected to not only re-introduce them, but become proficient in these areas. We are in great need of new materials to begin this process.
