Research shows, and I am a firm believer, that children become engaged learners during thematic units. Teaching thematically also helps students for whom English is a second language. At Prescott Elementary and in my 6th grade classroom more than 50% of students come from families where English is their second language. Last year Prescott teachers organized two thematic units for the school. We all studied about the Rain forest and then the Solar System. Our school came alive and enthusiasm from both teachers and students was refreshing. I would love to see our school transformed into our topic of study once more. How awesome would it be for Prescott Elementary to be transformed into the wonderful city of Chicago! The next thematic unit which I would love to organize would be titled "Sweet Home Chicago." Students would be immersed in the history, architecture, and neighborhoods, creating scale models of the beautiful skyscrapers and all that is great about the city. A thematic unit however requires many resources on the topic of study. I would need to collect non-fiction books on Chicago, picture books, videos/DVD's, postcards and posters. It would be great to have these materials to make this a successful unit of study. All of the students, from Preschool through eighth grade would benefit in being a part of the unit of study.
