I work as a Reading Teacher, grades K-4 and 8, at a small community-based inner city school. We have many students who have none or very few books in the home, and until recently, there was no public library nearby. The project that I would like to propose for my students in K-2 would be to expand a home-based reading program that we were able to start a few years ago. In 2000, we created Fortune 500 Lending Library, based on the Thousand Book Club in Bethlehem, which enabled families to borrow bags of books to read with their small children. Over the course of time, this would mean that those children had read (or been read to) a thousand books of quality literature. We were able to acquire Tough Traveler bags (with donations from Matthew Bender, Target, and Volunteer Center of Albany) and instead of ten books in each bag, we started with five. The program was EXTREMELY well-received by parents and children, as well as teachers. However, over the course of time, and moves (families moving away as well as our school physically moving to another building for a year), many of the bags and books were lost. We now have 35 of the bags intact, which are being used with our Pre-K families. I would really appreciate an opportunity to jumpstart the program again with our Kindergarten and 1st Grade students, eventually including 2nd Grade as well.
