My Students

Greetings from Southeastern North Carolina. First thank you for taking the time to visit this web site and reading my request for two special types of pencils, dry erase markers, with erasers in the cap, and a collection of fun books to kick off our study of numbers and math. I have the great honor

and privilege of teaching a self-contained class of very special needs students.

I have eleven students with varying needs and abilities. Two of my boys are in wheelchairs and do not have the ability to speak or communicate their needs. One girl has a very rare genetic disorder, and is profoundly delayed in her development, another girl is delayed in her development and the rest of my students are classified as autistic in varying degrees. Needless to say my days are on the run and very, very interesting. My students range in grade level from 1st to 6th, but are working on a Pre-K to early 1st grade level. We are in the largest school in our district with over 900 students in our K-8 school. Our county is totally dependent upon agriculture for it's economy, in fact the hogs, cows and poultry out number the humans! Yes it can get rather fragrant around here when the wind is just right! I am requesting some jumbo pencils and some pencils cut in the shape of triangles that are easier to

hold. Not everybody can hold a pencil so I will use a crayon or marker, but I am hoping that thick pencils or the non-round type will be easier for them to grasp and we can work on making marks on paper to recognizing our name and printing it. All of my students have writing work on desks each morning. For my more "advanced" students I am asking for some black dry erase markers, with a little eraser in the cap. That way each person has a lap board, (thank you donors!, the kids love them) and they can erase and make corrections without having to wait for someone to pass them a big eraser. This allows me to work with multiple students on different things at the same time, and the kids feel that they have some control when they can erase as they need to. For my kids, feeling like they have control over something is really important. Finally I am asking for a cool set of books about math. We can read them at story time and during math, to count,

find numbers, recognize numbers, all that cool number stuff.

Not all of my students will tune in or even follow along to the stories, but they will hear and be exposed. Maybe someday it will all click and they will remember hearing about the Three Little Firefighters or the Missing Pair of socks. Thank you so much for taking your time to visit and read. I hope you can find a request to help out, we can never truly tell you how much you impact our students lives, but please do know that you do.
