I run an after school Improvisational Theatre group and I want the kids to be able to perform a night of Improv Theatre in March. Our school has an auditorium, but you can not hear the kids from the stage because of the horrible acoustics. I teach 6th, 7th and 8th graders at the largest middle school in Manhattan. The kids do not get acting classes and they flourish in my after school program. If you remember being in Middle School, you will remember the natural dramatic flair that many kids had. The theatre is a perfect place for middle school aged kids to put that dramatic energy into something positive. The performance I am planning is an improvisational role play based on social issues facing the students. The actors (the kids) will decide the general ideas for each of the scenes. Using their acting skills and humor, the kids will bring attention and provide solutions to the social issues they care about: dealing with parents, drugs and alcohol, peer pressure, and fitting in, for example. I have about 40 kids in the theatre program. I am going to have two nights of improv so there are not too many kids on stage at once. I need at least 8 microphones that attach to their costumes and that they can switch between scenes. Without the microphones, our kids will not be heard and the performance will not have the powerful impact that it could on other students, parents, and teachers. Actors need to be heard. Please help fund this project; the NYC Board of Education does not fund this kind of program! Thank you.
