I am the seventh grade Algebra teacher at a charter school in San Jose. We are a college preparatory middle school in the Alum Rock District, a district where only 13% of all Mexican - Americans in the area go on to college. Here at KIPP Heartwood (80% Mexican), we are doing all we can to help our students attend college; last year we posted the highest passing rate (98%) on the California STAR math test. (More than 90% of our seventh graders are enrolled in Algebra this year!) However, we also want to expose them to different extracurricular activities to develop their interests and excite them to pursue future career options they may have never considered!
The Spanish teacher and I co-teach a Saturday elective, Intro to Photography. We have fifteen students who are eager to take pictures and learn all there is to know about the process! Up to this point we have been using disposable cameras, but would love to further our options. We would like to teach them how to develop pictures taken from manual cameras and show them how to use Photoshop with digital prints. Therefore, WE NEED YOUR HELP!
We are seeking to purchase 5 manual cameras and 5 digital cameras. It is our hope that we can have a photo exhibit and auction to showcase their work. We invite you to join us in this venture and to even stop by on a Saturday to watch the process!
