Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 3rd grade in a low income area in the South Bronx. Many of my students have attention difficulties and/or asthma, which makes using a traditional chalkboard less than ideal.
My students thrive when we use the school's limited available technology - they love any opportunity to use the computer lab and it is considered a special treat. Interactive, media-based lessons capture their imaginations and bring enthusiasm to their learning.
With the use of an interactive SMARTboard, the students in my class would be more confident learners and acquire the proper skills before moving on to the next grade. Using the interactive whiteboard, they would be able to watch educational CD-ROMs on the large screen and access virtual tools such as a protractor and research materials. Notes and assignments that I write could be printed out for absent students and my students with visual discrimination problems. Additionally, since this specific model of the SMARTboard is on wheels, this fantastic tool could be shared with my colleagues and used in other classrooms.
In the spring, my children write "All About" books on topics that they become experts in. Using the SMARTboard, my children would be able to display their research on a screen large enough to truly share this information as well as watch videos relating to their topics. They could import information and consolidate their research into easily acessable folders. Finally, they would be able to create presentations to show their research process at the publishing party celebrating their end products.
This tool is not only useful for literacy based instruction; we could do math problems together to show the steps that we need to follow. This would be especially useful in our geometry units, when we could show pictures of the various shapes in addition to written information about them. We would also be able to create classroom graphs together - something that is very difficult to do in a large scale without this technology.
This exciting technology would really move our classroom into the new millennium and provide fantastic instructional opportunities for my children.
