This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
This is only my second year teaching and I have been fortunate enough to teach freshmen both years. I was so proud because after only one year, I had already developed a pretty substantial resource base for my English 9 class. My classroom was filled with a variety of resources including college notebooks, texts and movies. Although I consider myself incredibly lucky to have only had a year's worth of materials lost in the fire at my high school, as I begin to teach again, I want to make sure that my deserving students have every resource at hand. The materials I am looking for include class sets of novels, poetry anthologies and classroom materials to allow for organization in this chaotic time.
The freshmen English class is a vital course for students. It is here that they truly begin to read and write analytically. It has become my passion because I am able to show them multiple genres of work. We work with short stories, poetry, the epic, and drama. Although all genres do not typically appeal to all students, the beauty is that they can find what they do enjoy.
Eastern Guilford High School is full of students who are waiting for someone to take their hands and tell them they can and will achieve something. These students need the unwavering support of teachers, parents and guardians. They also need a variety of resources to spark a love for academia. English is my passion; I want them to find theirs.
