Sleeping bags are the first step to getting our students out into the wilderness and learning the awesome natural history of America's west coast (plate tectonics, faulting, volcanoes) first hand. We are a charter middle school in one of S.F.'s roughest neighborhoods, and most of our kids have never been camping. Many of them have limited fitness opportunities as well because our neighborhood is not a safe place where kids can be out and about, and an established exercise culture is lacking. I am a new science teacher with a background in wilderness trip leading and a huge passion for natural history who wants to be taking my students up into the Sierra Nevada, the Coast Range, and on countless other adventures that will make our relationships with science, our bodies, the places we live, and with each other all the stronger. In 6th grade we have been learning California's natural history, and our students are dying to get out and explore the areas we so often see in PowerPoint presentations and slide shows. So, I want to get us rolling with a set of 10 synthetically filled sleeping bags rated to 20 degrees F. and 10 foam sleeping pads. The pads are a safety standard because they insulate people from the ground in lightning and in cold. Synthetic bags, as opposed to down-filled bags, keep people warm even when wet, and are easier to clean and maintain. I researched an abundance of products and chose bags that are light enough for the kids to comfortably travel with, are from a trusted brand so of good quality, and quite inexpensive as far as outdoor gear goes. Again, I can think of no greater gift that I could give my students than to get in to the wilderness and witness the beauty of our ever changing earth first hand. I want for them all to benefit from the character building that comes from building confidence with wilderness travel, and I want them to be introduced to what I consider our greatest inheritance as Americans, our natural landscapes.
