Art...it's always the first cut, but the most needed. Our funding limitations didn't allow us to offer art. We soon realized how necessary this outlet is for kids. Many times they bring the wear and tear from their home lives into a school subject such as art to express themselves in a positive manner.
The majority of scholars are from a community that makes them and their families resilient, but exposes them to situations that force them to grow up way too fast.
Although, the students have great potential to excel, they are not reminded often enough of their greatness. Therefore, in our school we push everyday to build them up and break them from a mentality that life begins and ends just with their neighborhood. Our colors are purple and black telling, letting them know that they are descendants of royalty and our motto "connected to succeed," to inform them that we are apart the greater puzzle. Our students many times are carrying the burdens of their families crises on their back and their pysche, so much so that we've made it a point to focus not only academic success but on their social emotional well being as well.
Starting up an art program, that will ultimately lead to our very own art studio will help us accomplish our goal of addressing the whole child. It gives our scholars freedom to express themselves and showcase hidden talents, while they learning valuable are techniques such as the principals of design, working with clay by experiencing the pinch-pot, slab and coil methods of hand building, and utilizing basic art elements. We plan to do art projects based around our interdisciplinary themes which include tolerance, community, identity and more. My students need art supplies in order to kick off our art studio program.
At our school we simply believe ALL children no matter the background or environment deserve the same well rounded, good quality education.
Your donation will not only allow us to build a solid art program but give scholars the opportunity to hone in on skill or talent that might otherwise go untapped.
