Hooray! This project is fully funded

I am a third grade teacher in the South Bronx. The majority of the students who attend our school are at or below poverty level. 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. The majority of my students are from single parent homes who are either getting by with one income or benefiting from government assistance. They are forced to deal with many problems and issues that many of us as adults have never had to face. Our school uses the Teacher's College (from Columbia University) Reading and Writing Program to teach writing. This program gives students the strategies they need in order to become better writers. It's a great program that I firmly believe in. I have seen it be successful!! As the students work through different units of study, not only do they work on improving their writing techniques but also on spelling and word choice. One way students can improve their writing is by using a Thesaurus. Once they are taught how to use them, they can't keep their little hands off of them. It's GREAT!! They get so excited about finding more exciting words in place of the normal, boring ones they use. I currently have a class of 27 students and I only have 2 Thesaurus to go around. The students do well with sharing, but it's always a race to see who will grab them first. I know they would be thrilled to have a class set, so they wouldn't have to worry about waiting forever just to look at one. They take such pride in their writing and seeing that smile on their face is more rewarding than I can say. Please help me, help them, become the best authors that they can be!!!
