Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love math. Sadly, they do not have engaging math materials to get them even more excited about learning the basic foundational skills they will need in order to succeed in math throughout their academic careers. They need fun, exciting and engaging activities, games and materials.
I teach Kindergarten in a low-income, turn-around school.
My students are African-American and Latino and many are English Language Learners. They are excited about learning and school, they love animals, books and Math, and love to draw and paint.
We have all day Kindergarten and are working hard to improve the quality of the Kindergarten day and make sure our students are receiving the balanced, engaging and academic instruction they deserve. Our students are reading, writing and excelling in Math, despite the fact that they come from extremely low socioeconomic backgrounds and are not getting their basic needs met outside of school.
These students are working hard in school and deserve the best materials and instruction possible. Giving them opportunities for partner and small group work during Math time will support their communication development, respect for each other, and overall appreciation and excitement for learning and practicing Math skills.
My Project
My students will be able to work together to sort, count, identify numbers and coins, add, graph and pattern with the 8 math games I have selected. They will count with the Peanuts in a bag counting game and the Strawberries in a basket game. They will have engaging individual, partner and small group activities to use during Math workshop time. This will allow me to work with students who need extra support and to challenge students who need it.
My students love their Literacy stations and are so engaged and excited about practicing these Language Arts skills with their classmates. Having materials for Math that will allow my students an independent work time will engage and excite them as well. They need the opportunity to work together, practice communication skills, support each other and explore and take learning risks together. These Math stations and materials will give them those opportunities. The teaching materials will engage and support their learning of basic Math skills including number identification, addition and coin recognition with the plastic coins and magnetic money.
This project is important because it will give students consistent engaging and exciting opportunities to practice basic Math skills together with magnetic numbers, coins, math trays, and more.
They will explore new Math concepts together and review other concepts independently and in small groups, which will improve their communication skills and mathematical reasoning. My students need and will benefit greatly from having an exciting and fun Math workshop time, as well as engaging whole-class teacher instruction materials.
