Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Hello. I am a teacher at PS 76 in Harlem. I teach fourth and fifth grade students who are learning disabled and/or have emotional impairments. My students need a lot of "alternative" methods to engage them in learning, not because they don't like to learn, but because traditional ways such as reading textbooks can become too frustrating. I have found that when presented with a computer game that teaches skills such as math, my students enjoy learning and gain new skills. I consider that a win-win combination. Currently, I have one computer game and I would like to have several educational options for teaching students. I have seen my students play the same math game for 3 years without growing bored. I have also seen students with severe ADHD and emotional problems sit for an hour solving math problems in order to get to the next level on the game. Working on a laptop makes my students feel successful and engages them. Plus, I know they are learning which is my main objective. I am asking for a variety of educational games that can be used on our laptops. I know that these games offset depression, frustration, and anger because my students have a means to show what they have learned in a user friendly way. For example, a student who becomes angry if he makes a mistake on his paper and sees eraser marks, now only needs to hit the backspace key. I know it sounds simple, but for my students it means the world of difference.
