In my Biology and Chemistry classes, laboratory activities are essential to learning. But at times, students are absent due to illness, or other reasons. This makes it difficult for the student to still comprehend the ideas the lab experiment is trying to teach.
My students are energetic, caring, and talented teenagers.
They attend a Magnet high school in an urban setting located in Indiana. They love any hand-on activities they are asked to perform. Since they are so active and creative, a lot of our Scientific learning also incorporates the arts. For example, in the past they have created and performed skits in class to demonstrate the cell cycle, and even protein synthesis.
My Project
All of these activities, such as labs, skits, science related poetry and chemistry demonstrations, are all great tools for learning but unless they are recorded, they will not be seen by students who perhaps could not be present at school on that day. Also, with a classroom camcorder available, such activities could serve as an additional resource for learning in the classroom's website. Parents could even have the joy of watching their child interact with their peers in a lab experiment, or get to watch them present the project their child had worked on all weekend.
This project is important to all students in my classroom.
It will benefit those who need to catch up on a lab experiment they have missed, and even those who did not fully comprehend the activity the first time around. Learning happens in different paces, and at different levels. The camera would be a tool to accommodate the needs of all students and allow them to use it as a learning reinforcement.
