My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? My students do not know this feeling but I want to give them this experience.

Our school is in the city and houses kindergarten through eighth grade.

I teach 32 sixth grade students. Most students are from single parent households and don't have a lot of money. It is a very diverse school. The students enjoy coming to school every day and genuinely love learning new things.

My Project

My students do not have access to a community or even a school library. They cannot check books out to take home with them. Some of them do not have enough money to eat 3 meals a day so they are definitely not buying books. My students do love to read though, especially when the subject is interesting and meaningful to them. While I do have some books in the classroom for them to read, the students need more options and more books on different levels. WIth guided level books, I can lead more effective guided reading groups. It will also allow the students to read more independently because they will be able to choose books that are on their level.

Reading should be something that students enjoy.

With guided level books, my students will be able to read books that are interesting to them and at their reading level. These books are paramount to the success of my students in the classroom and in the future.
