I am requesting two PC headphones for my two classroom student stations with sturdy wires and PC jacks. Also, we really need a printer stand.
The headphones we have are falling apart. They cut in and out making it impossible to get through the story or activity. They also leave black flakes of the "pleather" (covering from the earpieces) in my students' ears, necks and shoulders. My students use these PC stations to practice (English) listening to age appropriate stories/books with interactive comprehension questions and activities. Also, for math exercises, researching information, art and word processing.
Our printer currently sits on the same rectangular table that holds the computers. There is very little room for the students to manuever the mouse without bumping the next child's keyboard. A printer stand would remove the printer and allow the appropriate space between students so each could use the mouse comfortably.
I am a (self-contained) 1st grade bilingual (Spanish/English) teacher at a school that has an at-risk population of students. My students are precious children that are doing their best to learn to read and write English. Unfortunately they do not have the home support that children at other schools may have, as many of their parents do not speak English. These babies have been uprooted from their familiar surroundings (different countries in Latin America) and forced to adjust to a new environment. They are all hard working students that strive to learn English and "fit in" as best they can. Education is their only chance of breaking the cycle of poverty they come from. Many of their parents had to drop out of elementary school in their countries to work so their families could eat.
I would like my student to know a better life. My goal as a first grade teacher is to provide my students with as many positive learning experiences as possible so they may increase their self confidence and have a fighting chance of becoming successful adults someday. By exposing them to the age appropriate computer programs I hope to improve and increase their knowledge and skills in English and in general.
Having two new headsets for our classroom PC's would allow all of my students a turn at the computer to hear and practice stories and activities in English. A printer stand would allow the needed space between computers so students can better enjoy their turn at the computer without feeling crowded.
