What is the difference between a third grade child who resides in the suburbs and the third grade child that lives in an impoverished area? The difference is not their intelligence, willingness to learn or potential. The difference is opportunity. I am a third grade teacher at a school located in an impoverished area in Houston, Texas. I see so much potential everday. Children who want to learn more than just the three R's. Children whose future is predetermined according to societies terms and conditions. Many of these children don't know about certain things because they haven't been exposed to them. I want to expose them to culture to help them realize that their future is limitless. Golf is not only a physical game, it is an intellectual game. It focuses on distance, speed, and geometry. I want to start the only golf program in Texas that focuses on 3rd to 5th graders in an impoverished area. I want to use golf as not only a game, but a way to make them become more interested in math to become lifelong learners. Imagine how they will view themselves and their future. Imagine them going to a golf course for the first time. This can impact their immediate future as it relates to math objectives and curriculum and it can open doors to college scholarships and things the children could only dream of. To them college is a dream that they could never attain or afford. I'm determined to empower my children to become great. Maybe together we will find the next Tiger, or at the very least enable a child to dream.
