I am a speech therapist with the NYC department of Education. I am proud and honored to work with students who are diagnosed with the disorders such as cerebral palsy, mental retardation, blindness, deafness, autism, specific syndromes, and global cognitive and developmental delays. These students are unable to communicate verbally. To give them a chance to express themselves we use picture symbols. For example, the student (who has been trained) will pick up a 2" by 2" picture symbol that represents a desired object/item/action. Once the student hands over the symbol, they receive their requested action/object/item. These symbols are customized and used for each student to use throughout the day and in their class. Our school does not have the budget to provide us ink to make the communication books. Therefore the students have to wait to communicate. To provide my students with this opportunity I would need 8 of each Lexmark color (27) and black (17)ink cartridges. Expressive communication is a right deserved by all! To buy the ink to make these communications books are more than teachers can afford.
