The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Holistic Approach to 8th Grade Sci
My students need 30 copies of the 'Omnivore's Dilemma for Kids' for a holistic view of 8th Grade science, which includes physical, earth, and biological sciences.
Students today do not know where their food comes from, yet it seems to be an important part of their life. What I hope to do is use Michael Pollan's Omnivore's Dilemma as a way to tie all the topics together for the year and make it relevant to their lives.
I teach 8th grade science at a rural NC middle school.
We are a Title 1 school with a very diverse population; we are 40% Latino/a/Hispanic, 30% African-American and 30% Caucasian. A vast majority of our population are on free or reduced lunch. My students have a lot of potential! They just need to see how science affects their everyday lives!
Michael Pollan's book the Omnivore's Dilemma is a great look at three different food systems at how it effects the environment and human health. A young reader's edition was recently published aimed at middle and high school students. I plan to use the book for a year long food study and I would like to tie it in with our curriculum which includes chemistry, water systems, microbiology, cellular biology, and evolution. This will benefit the student's lives because they will learn how what they eat effects them and everything around them. With your donations I can use a piece of non-fiction (which most students at this point have not had much access to) in order to integrate literacy skills in a science class.
Having students reading scientific non-fiction will be highly beneficial for my students.
Exposing them to scientific non-fiction early on will prepare them for work that they have to do later on in high school and college science classes. Another benefit will be that students will regain knowledge that most Americans have forgotten: where our food comes from.
DonorsChoose makes it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need. Public school teachers from every corner of America create classroom project requests, and you can give any amount to the project that inspires you.
