Mrs. B. from FL is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need the eReader because they are not exposed to technology and they get excited about reading when it is introduced through other media.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students tend to focus on watching mindless TV series or seeing violent Xbox games. Most often they enter school without ever seeing a book. By exposing them to the world of imagination thru reading, they can master the world.
My students live in a high-poverty, crime-ridden area, because low-income families cannot afford educational resources or participate in school and community activities.
Statistics state that students with illiterate parents have a higher rate of academic failure which directly affects the children. My students racial makeup consist of 98% black, 1% Hispanic, .50% white, .50 other. We are a Federal Title 1 school that currently has an "F" grade as a school. My students are typical 4th graders who enjoy sports, music, clothes, and the latest game on the market. The students tend to struggle with how to look past their current living environment and see the future as promising. I have a mixture of academic levels, ranging from the above level to below-level. My below-level students aren't equipped to handle basic writing and/or math challenges. The school offers additional support, such as Intensive Reading and Math programs, but it is at the school.
Technology is especially beneficial in reading instruction because of its power to keep students interested while they are engaged in meaningful literacy activities. By using the Nook, eReader I can tap into the digital storytelling and boost motivation and scaffold understanding of traditional literacy's. They can link different types of representations such as pictures with sound, oral readings with written text, provide game contexts, and any other combinations that might reinforce teaching and learning. Studies suggest that the increased flexibility, support, responsiveness to students, and visual attractiveness of the e-Reader will help increase students' motivation to read.
By providing this tool, my students will show enthusiasm for using reading technology, even when they were otherwise reluctant to work on their reading concepts.
This project is very important to me because without the ability to read and comprehend, my students chances to learn and survive in a every changing society is nil. Thank you.
