Have you ever tried to do a job around the house that required a wrench but you only had a screwdriver? This is the dilemma facing students in Youth Services. They are provided the textbooks necessary for their education but have no other tools to enhance their educational experience.
Youth Services provides education to middle school and high school students in residential treatment facilities in Florida.
Students are enrolled in the core subjects of English, math, science, and social studies and also given career preparation instruction. My facility houses students that are in a drug rehabilitation program and are typically in the facility for eight to ten months. While in the facility the students receive the curriculum typically received in their respective grade levels if in a traditional school. Students that are overage for their grade level and have fallen behind in the traditional setting are given the opportunity to pursue their GED. If successful, upon receiving their GED they are given additional opportunities for online study in post-secondary education.
I am requesting a ELMO type document viewer to utilize for the classroom and in conjunction with the morning show. In the traditional setting, the morning show is used to broadcast special announcements, incentives, educational opportunities, etc to the students within that school site. There are eleven school sites within Youth Services and this creates a logistical obstacle getting time sensitive information to all students. Having the ability to broadcast a morning show will give all the students across Youth Services access to the same information in a timely manner. The show is created by the students with the assistance of the teacher. The students will learn and improve their creative writing skills, journalism, learn to edit photos and video, practice public speaking, and become more computer literate. Producing a morning show requires the student to practice sound time management to meet deadlines, be responsible for their duties, and will enhance school pride.
The technology requested will make an immediate impact in the classroom.
Lessons can become interactive and reach all learner types. The ability to broaden the language arts curriculum to include journalism, public speaking, and technology will give the students in Youth Services options they currently do not have. The morning show will spark an interest in broadcast journalism and technology that may lead to brighter futures and career options.
