HELP STUDENTS MAP THEIR COMMUNITY ASSETS FOR HOMELESSNESS
My students need five digital cameras to help raise awareness and funds for homeless youth by mapping out the assets in the community using a photo presentation.
This project expired on June 8, 2011.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
Empower my high school students and give them a chance to be advocates and social change leaders in our community by tackling the issue of homelessness and how it affects kids.
My students are High School Seniors who are in search of ways to change their community they live in.
They are intelligent, bright, and young social change leaders in training. The kids range in age from 16-19 years old and attend a Charter school in a low income area that has more than 90% of its population on the free and reduced lunch program. The school is located in Phoenix, Arizona where education budget cuts has truly impacted my kids lives.
It would be amazing for my students to receive five digital cameras to use for their community asset mapping. The students will use the cameras to take pictures of the various assets that exist in their community to help raise awareness about homelessness and take videos of interviews with various community leaders who have a skills dedicated to our issue area. The students will then turn the pictures and videos into a presentation that they will use to educate their peers about homelessness and help in their fundraising activities. The students will learn the skill and art of advocacy, fundraising, project planning, professional presentation and will be empowered to know that their voice and actions can create systemic changes in our community.
Donations to this project will make a large difference in the lives of these students.
Most of my students are products of domestic violence, homelessness, foster care, and abuse. I have had student tell me that they feel powerless in this world and do not think their voice matters. I teach a Service Learning course in its first year at the school and I want them to understand the real power they have in their community. These student are our future political and community leaders.
