Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Resource: One Membership to .Mac Internet domain, one iLife '06 to easily put podcast on the Internet and one Digital voice recorder to do more interviews outside class.
School: I teach seventh and eighth grade math at Foshay Learning Center, a school located in the heart of south Los Angeles. Our population is about 80% Latino/a and 20% African-American. About 70% of the population at Foshay is eligible for free and reduced lunches (Title 1 School).
Project: About 15 students and I ranging from sixth grade to seventh grade have started doing our own pod-cast (soon to be on the Internet). A pod-cast is a radio show that is broadcasted through a web site. People from around the world can download it and listen to it. On this show we talk about issues that pertain to the students. So far we have recorded shows on being Ethiopian in America and at Foshay, about video games, school uniforms, and bullying. We have also recorded our own commercial to promote the group and MESA (mathematics, engineering, science achievement), which our school has played on the P.A. during homeroom. Due to lack of MAC computers and mac software at our school we have been recording on my own personal ibook laptop. This project brings a new and exciting experience to my students. Everyday they ask me, "are we going to record today"? Two days out of the week we record and two days we plan out what we want to say on the show. This means that I have students write what they will say prior to recording. This experience also allows students from low social economic backgrounds to use technology that facilitate the learning of valuable skills such as: team work, learning how to use software (GarageBand), how to use a Mac computer, writing, planning, and bringing their imaginations to life.
