Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If you're a reader for life, it probably wasn't your school's English anthology that inspired your love for books. More likely, you connected with a powerful novel or nonfiction text, and that memory still drives you to read today. Now, you can give our fifth graders that same experience.
With fifty-eight families and a small group of teachers, my colleague and I lead a free, extended-day school program preparing Nevada fifth graders for success in middle school and beyond.
Each of our students attends classes from 7:30 am. in the morning to 5:00 pm. in the evening, five days a week. Driven by high expectations, rigorous assessments, expanded instruction, and one-of-a-kind field lessons, our team is redefining the possibilities for public education in one of the lowest performing states in the nation.
My Project
Advanced literacy is the cornerstone of our program, and teaching our students to read deeply and critically is the single most important thing we can do to position them for success. This project would give us a complete class set of Christopher Paul Curtis's "The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963", for our students to study plot development and analyze real historical fiction, all while finding their own love for reading. The novel captures the self-proclaimed "Weird Watsons" as they prepare for a trip into the South amidst the turmoil of the civil rights movement and 1960s America. Through the familiar, funny trials of a family, kids come to understand the real fears and challenges for ordinary people caught in a national struggle.
At the end of the day, it's great literature that inspires us to read, and it's inspired readers who become great readers.
You can put these books in our hardworking students' hands this winter, and you can put them on that path to become readers for life.
