I work with a small group of reluctant readers that have not experienced the joy of reading yet. What better way to motivate them than a cool electronic reader! With 4 Nook Readers we can share and boost their enthusiasm toward reading and get them hooked on reading!
My small group of third graders are more than a year behind in their reading skills and reading is viewed as a chore rather than a joy to them.
Imagine not loving to read! I can't! My project is to work with them this year and impact their attitude toward reading so that they become "reading fools" that can't put a book down once they've started. We are working with high-interest easy readers, and motivation is high already, but with NOOK readers I think we can push them over the edge to being real readers who love to read on their own! Not because someone is always nagging them to read but because they have discovered the world of books has opened to them. We have our own top secret reading hide-away with security clearance required for the "General, Chief, Lieutenant, Captain, Secret Agent, Colonel, and Special Agents" that come there to read, read, READ! They love their special place. With special electronic readers it would be the coolest reading class ever!
My Project
My students will learn to LOVE reading! I ran into a student at the store with his grandparents and gave him a big old hug and told his grandparents how hard he has been working at school on his reading and grandpa said, "That's good, 'cause he doesn't read at home". I was heartbroken for that boy. His own family doesn't view him as a reader - how can he??? I want to change his world to include the world of reading. What could change any person's world for the better than to have that world at your fingertips? My students will READ and enjoy it, maybe for the first time in their lives.
Third graders are supposed to be able to read at grade level.
But if they hate to read there is little chance of that- if they are already at third grade and only reading at a first grade level. This new electronic Nook reader may be the hook they need to finally get hooked on reading. Third graders are typically sweet, kind, easily excited, and love new things. They are not yet jaded, cynical,or pessimistic about school. Their futures will be bright and full of promise when reading is fun!
