Remember your teacher reading to you as you sat on the carpet? How magical it was to hear the stories and see the pictures-imagine never seeing a child who looks like you in those stories. The books on my list share principles like unity and self-determination with diverse illustrations for my kids.
Our school is becoming more culturally diverse each year.
As we change, we are trying to continue to serve everyone by using music, art, movement and language to help ALL the kids who step through our doors. Each child has a story and we try to work with all backgrounds. The teachers in our elementary school are dedicated to reaching all their students and are always in need of new resources.
My Project
The books on the list are all connected to seven principles: unity, self-determination, responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. These are the principles of Kwanzaa. Every child can benefit from learning about and incorporating these principles in their lives:whatever culture, color or background. We want our students to leave school with knowledge and skills to go to the next level and with the confidence and self-concept to continue to achieve at the highest levels. These books help us achieve this!
I know how hard the teachers at my school work to connect with all of their students.
The books we are asking for will help us to be more culturally relevant in the classroom and teach important life principles to each child in our school.
