My students need in the classroom art supplies including scissors, glue, construction paper and drawing paper because our district is small, and teachers are only given a small amount of money for supplies.
In First Grade, the children should be coloring, cutting and gluing on a daily basis, but without the materials, the development of fine motor skills suffers.
Most of my First Grade students come from families living at poverty or near poverty levels.
The children are given a supply list at the beginning of the year, but most of the students never have a complete set of supplies. Our school has already been identified as a Title I school, which means a very high percentage of the students are on free or reduced price lunches. My children want to learn and they deserve to have all of the things they need to get a quality education. The development of fine motor skills is very important at this age, and art supplies would help make that possible.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of art supplies so that my children can develop their fine motor skills in some fun ways. We learn about many fun things in Social Studies, and would love to make projects to take it one step further. Unfortunately, not having the supplies on hand makes it difficult. A large part of our Social Studies involves studying seasonal changes and holidays. One example of something that happens almost yearly is that the children love to make chains for Christmas to hang around the room and in the hallways, but when your red and green paper is limited, sometimes you just have to say, "I'm sorry."
Tracing, cutting, coloring and gluing are very important at this age because they help develop fine motor skills.
Fine motor skills are some of the skills that these children will use for the rest of their lives.
Having the necessary art supplies available in my classroom would truly make a big difference in the development of my students. Thank you so much.
