My students need two djembe drums and drumsticks, the Def Poetry videos, and Bill Moyer's Fooling With Words book to turn them into expressive expert poets.
Have you ever felt so mad or angry about something that the only way you knew to express those feelings was to write it down on paper? If so, then you are like one of the students in our Poetry Club after school, also known as Words in Color. These students have learned to channel their feelings.
Our students come from low-income families struggling to make ends meet.
These students face enormous challenges and hardships as children and young adults, which often translates into disparities or gaps in their education. Consequently, we the teachers and educators who teach them, endeavor to go above and beyond in our efforts to ensure that these students get the best education that we can provide them with.
My Project
The Poetry Club was created by as an after school extracurricular activity for our urban students to use as an outlet to express themselves creatively and in a positive manner. To help us to continue along that path of creativity, we are requesting some poetry books by Bill Moyer and Def Poetry videos, which will aid our students in learning about different ways to express themselves as poets and artists. In addition, we are requesting two djembe drums and drumsticks, to help us prepare for our upcoming Black History Month Poetry slam and fashion show in February. These books, videos and drums will make the world of a difference to Words in Color poetry club because they will catapult us to to where we want to be as an afterschool club.
By donating to this project, you are affirming to our students that you are proud of them for always making the decision to react positively in an upsetting situation.
And you are willing to support their decision to continue to do so. Words in Color has done a lot for our students, to the point that I see students walking the hallways with poetry journals in hand. I hope that after you read through this project, you come to see this also and that it makes you more willing to donate. Thank you.
