Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 7th grade language arts at an urban middle school, and am trying to write a multicultural curriculum that will engage my students. Specifically, I am looking to integrate the novel "Monster" into my classroom. "Monster" by Walter Dean Myers will anchor my unit on "Identity;" a theme which is fundamental for adolescents to explore in the academic context. The novel, about an African-American male falsely accused of a crime, deals with complex issues surrounding identity that will foster a meaningful classroom dialogue among my students. Additionally, the format of the novel (it is written as a movie script) is both engaging and an opportunity to expose students to a new genre of writing. I can get most of the material needed for the unit, but am unable to afford a class set (40) of books without your valuable help. [I have four classes of 32-36 students. I will use this as an in-class reading project, so buying 40 books will impact about 140 students]. This unit on identity is critical to my students' learning experience; once we have deconstructed our own identities through the unit (using this novel to ask provocative questions that guide us), I move the students onto placing their own experience in the broader societal context.
