Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am fourth year physics teacher in a very diverse, very crowded Los Angeles Public High School. I left the field of science and engineering to try and make a difference in the lives of high school kids, and I have been rewarded with some of the most amazing "aha" moments in MY life. I love my job.
Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of my work is my frequent inability to bring some of the more elegant, strange and spectacular aspects of physics to the minds of my students. My school lacks some of the elaborate physical resources necessary to pull off elaborate physical demonstrations of many phenomena. Often, I am left to draw successive still frames of physics events on the white board. To this generation of video-game savvy, Internet junkies, my drawings are not always inspirational.
To address this challenge, I am daily trolling the web for free physics applets to animate and illustrate these difficult points. Sometimes I am successful, but often I have found the applets themselves very limited. Recently, I have researched physics simulation building software. This software would allow me to animate complex phenomena in Newtonian mechanics. Further, a class license would allow my students to explore these animations with computer resources on our high school campus.
I wholeheartedly believe that the regular introduction of interactive simulations to augment class lecture and lab will significantly affect the level of participation and success in my classroom. Ideally, I would begin using the simulation for the school year starting this fall.
