Mr. P. Benjamin Franklin High School
New Orleans, LA Grades 9-12

The Close-Up Government/Current Events Program allows students to meet with government leaders in Washington, D.C. and learn first hand from government representatives and elected leaders what important current issues confront Americans today. Ben Franklin High School in New Orleans was flooded by Hurricane Katrina. Its students confronted many personal hardships to come back to the school they love. The Franklin Community came back and worked to reopen our campus. We still have much to repair and replace but we are optimistic about the future. Ben Franklin students have participated in this program for many years but because of Hurricane Katrina our source of grants to make the program cost for students more affordable no longer exists. We have tried to find other funding with no success. No public school in New Orleans presently has been able to participate in the program again. We would like to change that especially because of the experiences our students endured from the storm. We want other young people from around the United States to understand what Hurricane Katrina did to our community and how our government reacted and continues to react. This program is a life experience for young people that they never forget. Through Close-Up students gain an understanding of the important issues confronting America and how citizens can affect public policy. This program promotes leadership and citizenship skills.
