This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Every student can learn,just not on the same day, or the same way."-George Evans. I teach Resource room in a poor demographic. My class room has students with high needs. My overhead projector isn't cutting it. They need technology. They already get so little at home, I want class to be different.
I have 8 students in each of my English and Math classes.
They have trouble with math. They don't come from privileged lives. Most of the students at school don't believe they can go to college. Our school is pushing to change that. My students have another challenge, special needs. They need to give extra effort and need special support to learn the basic grade level curriculum. They give that effort everyday despite feeling put down! They are amazing kids!
It is so excited to see them excited about math. They thrive with hands on activities! Each day we try to do an activity for 15 minutes. These kids come from areas and lives where most of us would have trouble getting by at 25 let alone 13. They inspire everyday. I just want to do the same for them.
My Project
An Overhead projector will turn my class upside down! Everyday we do notes for 15 to 20 minutes. Sometimes it takes much longer because they can't read from the overhead! Special needs kids NEED big font and bold letters. I just cant accomplish this with the overhead. They deserve this overhead. I plan on showing them movies or pictures to help them process information since most special needs students aren't auditory learners, they need to visualize! This is the most important. I think it really is inhibiting the learning in my classroom.
I also plan on taking "virtual" class trips. Showing them where math is used.
I could also Brain pop videos, and the Math Raps videos which I think are great for students! They could play practice and drill games!
Another huge reason is because we could finally use the Smart Board in my classroom!! I just paid out of my pocket to fix it! I just can't afford the projector on top of that.
Please help!
My students truly deserve and need it! I cant wait to send all the donors their smiling faces! This will change the dynamic of our class everyday! Having to use an overhead really limits our lesson plans. Videos, pictures are a must for these kids and I will finally be able to provide them with it.
