Hooray! This project is fully funded
I will be teaching a 7th grade inclusion math classroom this year. I love math and my students, however, the challange in middle school is that many students come into my room on day one CONVINCED that they can't do math and/or don't like it.
My goal with this three part proposal is to PROVE THEM WRONG! One of the challanges in the math classroom is creating a safe and fun environment in which students can work at a comfortable pace without the fear of peer comments if they just don't get it the first time. I anticipate this "safe environment" being even more crucial in an inclusive classroom.
Therefore, I would like to use games that support critical thinking skills and standard curriculum to create both an incentive to complete more standard tasks and a non-threatening manner for ALL students to succeed in my math classroom.
In intend to post a list each day of "MUST DO's" and "CAN DO's." All students will be aware that once they have completed all "MUST DO's" (including the lesson for the day) - then they "CAN DO" anything that they one from that day's list. Giving adolescent students choice in how they practice a skill can crate a spark for even the most reluctant Mathmatician. This is where YOU come in. There are some awesome games on the market that my own kids love to play at home that reinforce geometric concepts, operations with integers, fractions, and within equations, and basic problem solving skills to exercise the brain.
In Part 1 - 3 each of two games- Blokus is a MENSA supported game and each game is a strategy based board game that will trick kids into problem solving while having fun. RUMIS is 3-D so it assists students with Geometric concepts and strategic thinking.
