Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My seventh graders are wild about writing. In the fall, they will explore the many ways of unlocking the meaning of unfamiliar words. Students will use a dictionary, Princeton review study guide and a thesaurus to assist them. They will also use prefixes, suffixes and roots to determine word meanings. Children will make map cut-outs of Italy and Greece to show the origins of some commonly used prefixes. Students will make a word wall using sentence strips in the classroom as they learn new words each day.Finally, they will use garage band to compose a word rap explaining ways to decode words. They will also make a personal dictionary of all of the words they have learned to use throughout the year. This will give them a great foundation, not only for the upcoming standardized tests, but for life ans well.
