My students need four microscopes in order to study the world that's been unseen to them.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
To students, the world that they can't see is not really real. If they can see all the things that make up our world, it will draw their interest and encourage them to dig deeper into a world that they can make a difference in.
Our students come from mostly low income homes.
Many can't see a way out of this life. If the students are given materials to learn about a world outside of the one they live in daily, it will encourage them to find a way to become working, caring, adults with a life that allows them to make good and important changes in a world that they can become a part of. Otherwise their lives will end up being like their parents' and their parents' before them.
My students will be able to actually see with their own eyes the things that we read about in class and discuss using these four microscopes. When this happens, they become interested in learning more about these things that they haven't seen. Even though I'm just writing this grant, my students are interested and excited about the things that we can do with these microscopes. They've already begun discussing how we can save the lizard skin from our class and compare it to snake skin that I have, plant tissue and many other things around us. Things like this open new worlds and possibilities to children who often see no other possibilities in their lives. These are great minds that are too often left to idle thoughts that lead them into nothing but trouble and poor futures.
The students in this area have bright, inquiring minds.
Far too often, their questions are answered with "I don't know"; "Go on and leave me alone, I"m busy"; "I don't have time for this mess" or "I just don't have the materials to work on this with you." We need to have the time, materials, and know how to share with them. These children need all the encouragement they can get to learn as much as they can and to BE as good as they can. Help us to help them, please.
