Teaching history shouldn't mean being limited to technology from the dark ages. Help history and maps come alive for my students with the amazing, interactive technology of the iPad.
I teach world history to a diverse group of students in the 6th and 7th grade.
My students represent a variety of special learning needs and challenges; English language learners, GATE students, special education students, and socio-economically disadvantaged. Schools have had so many budget cuts in recent years. I teach in a working-class community where parents care about their students' education, but don't have money to support the school and make up for the lack of funding coming from the state. My students are at a disadvantage when they are limited to pen and paper. They need to be exposed to the latest technology.
My Project
History shouldn't be considered a boring subject. Students learn best when a class is interactive, exciting and fun. The iPad is a wonderful product from Apple that can easily be incorporated into the classroom. I plan to hook my iPad up to my projector and allow students to interact with a variety of apps. There are many apps available that support history, with more being created daily. Several of the world history apps are fantastic. Geography is a main topic I teach throughout the year. Interactive maps would make the world come alive in my classroom. Students need to have a solid understanding of geography to be successful in our global community. There are world trivia apps that would be very engaging. Students could also use the iPad to control my Smart Board and increase student participation. The iPad accommodates all learning styles and is easy to use. If chosen for the Chevron Classroom Challenge, I would want to integrate more iPads into classrooms at my school.
Technology is the key to future success.
Students should have access to cutting edge technology at school. History is more accessible when paired with the interactive apps on the iPad. My students would be so excited to learn about geography and history with an iPad.
