Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most teenagers don't read, often because their parents haven't instilled this in them; however, many of my students' parents do not speak English. I have National Board Certification and know this is a meaningful novel that suits my students and our learning community educationally and culturally.
My students are hard-working.
Many of them work after school. In general, they are 1st and 2nd generation Mexican immigrants living in South Chicago. They are good kids living in an all-too-often dangerous neighborhood. They are respectful and have dreams, but often can't afford college.
My Project
My students will read this novel and build self-confidence. They will also enjoy our exploration of magical realism! THIS NOVEL WILL BE SHARED WITH OVER 330 JUNIORS IN A NEW ACT-PREP/COLLEGE PREP. COURSE! The magical story will make this an interesting, but more importantly challenging read. It will allow me to inspire the act of reading and prepare these kids for college by SENDING A NOVEL HOME TO READ.
This book will change many of our students' pessimistic views towards reading and foster a literary respect for their own culture and our American dream of college graduation and a successful, highly-literate life.
They will explore the genre of Magical Realism in this text and artwork including Dali. Our school has novels, but most are only classroom sets that cannot be sent home.
In addition, over 330 juniors will be challenged for studying this wonderful novel.
