Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am honored to teach high school English at a unique charter school located near the San Diego/Tijuana Border. Nearly all of our student population qualifies in extreme risk categories – beyond social economic factors and free and reduced lunch.

Life is tough for many of our students.

Living along a violent border, leaves many of our students vulnerable on a daily basis. Many of our students literally put their lives on the line to come to school. It is not rare to get to school in the morning and hear that yet another one of our students has ended up in jail, another teen is pregnant, and the new tragedy; someone else has gone missing. Our students are fighters, survivors,and lovers. They don't just survive on a daily basis, they add love and light enduring what others don't have to.

My Project

Imagine showing up to class one morning, and having your teacher ready with visuals, media clips, and sound. She can actually show a PowerPoint presentation, a media clip, or pictures of YOU! Imagine being able to use technology, a LCD projector, that has existed for years, but has been denied to you because of your schools' economic background. It is difficult for our students to envision that, because they have never lived it. To them, technology is going to the computer lab once a week, a computer lab filled with outdated, agonizingly slow computers.

My project is important because media and technology are important.

It is not fair that my students have a lower quality of education because their teacher has to spend so much time figuring out how to teach them about technology, without being able to actually use technology.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
