There are 30 students in my 5th grade class! There isn't enough instruction time to show each individual student skills they need (like measurement, test taking strategies, graphing, etc). I also need to show examples of student essays and homework to prepare them for writing tests and state tests.
We are a fifth grade class in a high poverty inner-city school.
There aren't enough resources available to give these kids advantages other schools can provide. Our kids struggle to make ends meet and often can't afford resources like school uniforms. It is difficult for these kids to focus on academics when day to day living is a struggle. It is important that these kids have every opportunity for success and we strive to educate them as best we can so they can provide a better life for themselves in the future.
With a document camera, I can share and display student work, go over homework answers for the whole class, demonstrate how to make graphs, and display practice test materials. I can show the students how to fill in standardized test answer sheets and display sample questions so they will know what to expect. It will be an effective way to teach measurement by modeling and displaying for the whole class.
I can also have students display their work to the entire class. Students work harder on their work when they know they will present to the whole class. I can show the whole class how to use the dictionary and thesaurus by displaying how to find guidewords, pronunciation guides, and definitions for daily vocabulary.
I can display real science or social studies media. I can provide guided practice by having the students complete classwork assignments as a group by taking turns on an answer sheet that is on display for the whole class to see.
Students will get individualized instruction in a highly visible format.
This technology will give me the ability to show details to a bigger audience and would take less instruction time to do it. This is very important for these struggling students in order to provide as much learning time as possible so they can have the education to move further in life. These kids need every advantage in order to become meaningful and productive members of society. They deserve a chance at a better life.
