Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a Humanities class of 7th graders on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Three days a week I have my students read independently. The girls in my class have books in our classroom library that they love, but unfortunately there are not many books that have grasped the attention of the boys in my class. The boys tell me they would read more if there were books that suited their interests! The boys in my class deserve to have books that they WANT to read, but they are waiting for books that are interesting to them. As their teacher, I feel responsible for giving them a sense of excitement about reading during these formative years. If they go another 1-2 years without developing a love for reading, I know that it is unlikely they will become lifelong lovers of literature. Wanting desperately to provide my active and inquisitive young male students engaging texts, I gave the boys in my class a list of book titles and asked them to tell me which titles seemed exciting to them. They came up with at least 10 titles they found intriguing. I know how excited and grateful my boys would be if they had these exciting additions to our classroom library. I would use these texts during guided reading and book clubs, and I know the boys would begin to be engaged during our weekly independent reading sessions. Thank you.
